Welcome to the Wonderful World of Waveneys.
Our majestic craft were designed by W.S. Parker who had a boat yard in the Dead End along side Caldecott Road.
The Waveney Sailing Club (1880s to 1953) had requested designs and the decision to build was taken in 1921. The first four boats raced together on Oulton Broad, short race of some 4 hrs. 26 mins.. Incorporating the broad the river and back again. Big cruisers with the likes of Queen Nab
were all in the race. No doubt the Commodore PH did well after the racing. Believed to be the home base of the Waveney SC.
A to G were build before the War. The first 8 boats were lettered rather than numbered all are named after Marsh Plants.
In 1950 Bob Waller commissioned Fowlers Yard to build 10 Waveneys, these he sold to his friends for the grand sum of £350 for a basic model or £400 for the deluxe. They raced on Wednesday Afternoons, early closing day and Sundays.
By 1960, W26 had been launched.
In 1994 The Fleet gave permission for Jimmy Toplis to make a mould of W12 Penny Royal and duly built Celandine W27 the first GRP hulled Waveney. By 2004, W34 the 8th GRP version had been launched and all successfully raced together.
Many of the earlier craft have now been rebuilt and ready for another 50 years of giving pleasure to so many.
The Fleet is very proactive and have kept the boats up to date, safer to sail as well as really exciting to race.
We regularly get 12 Waveney’s on the line through the summer and usually 20 enter the Annual Championships.
The Waveney One Design Class Association is run by a Chairman, Captain, Hon. Sec/Tres. With 2 members as official Measurers. The fleet in now embarking of getting it’s plans up to date by being digitally drawn, we could then get a set of frames and start building in timber again. A truly sustainable material to use.
Waveney’s sail on Wednesday evenings from May to October, every Saturday afternoon, Sunday mornings and half of the afternoons for family social events with some personnel handicap trophy racing. Sunday afternoons are really great, very few use the Broad so it’s wide open for us to use and Waveney’s come into their own.
The Fleet prides itself on being Family based, the teenagers regularly showing the more aged members the way round which bodes well for the future of Waveney’s
